6th Nature of Prosperity Dialogue — Activism in a new climate

Appeals for people to act now in response to the climate emergency surround us. Many of them focus on the responsibility of the individual to act: to eat less meat, to drive less, to fly less. Does this focus on the role of individuals underestimate the challenge of sustainable consumption?

Is there a danger that appeals to the individual ignore social inequality and shift responsibility for action away from Government and industry.  How else can people act? What does it mean to act as an environmental citizen and what kinds of opportunities are there for effective collective action?

Activism in a new climate is the sixth in a series of dialogues on the Nature of Prosperity to be held in Manchester (Bridge 5 Mill) on 3 December. The event will include a performance of “The World We Made“—an urgent new play about our common future; an interactive exhibition on the People’s Palace of Possibilities; a panel discussion with academics and activists; and two keynote talks.

Confirmed speakers include Rebecca WillisSherilyn MacGregorGeorge BardaBrian DohertyRowan Williams and CUSP Director Tim Jackson. You are cordially invited to join us. Further details will be confirmed shortly.

The event is free of charge; but seats are limited. Please register your seat via Eventbrite.

The Centre for the Understanding of Sustainable Prosperity (CUSP) is an internationally leading research organisation funded by the UK’s Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). It takes the form of a rich international network, drawing together expert partners from academic and non-academic institutions as co-producers of the work programme. The overall research question is: What can prosperity possibly mean in a world of environmental, social and economic limits?
