Aviation and the Climate Crisis (Manchester) – hosted by Flight Free UK

An inspiring event exploring the climate impact of aviation, flight-free travel, and how people power can save the world.

“How can we solve the climate crisis?”

Scientists give us little over a decade to slash our emissions, with the IPCC recommending an individual carbon output of 2.3 tons annually. Some say that’s optimistic and we should be looking at no more than 1 ton each.

One intercontinental flight can produce up to 1.6 tons of CO2, with a trans-Atlantic trip emitting up to 3 tons. There is no doubt that flying less is a vital part of our action on climate change.

Yet despite Parliament declaring a climate emergency, the aviation industry continues to expand, with targets of carrying over 8bn passengers by 2035.

So, is there anything we can do about it?

We will hear from speakers exploring the issues, including what difference individuals can make, what action the government needs to take, and if there is an answer to the coming climate crisis.

Speakers:

Anna Hughes, Flight Free UK

Ali Abbas, Manchester Friends of the Earth

Alice Larkin, Tyndall Centre Manchester
