Community Orchard Wassail (Save Ryebank Fields)

Come and help our community orchard grow by planting new trees with us, from 4pm, on Friday 17th January, which is Old Twelfth Night ~ the traditional date of the Apple Wassail.

In accordance with ancient rites, the orchard will be blessed by pouring cider on the roots of the trees, along with traditional songs and rhymes. We’ll also be exploring the folklore around the Apple Tree Man ~ the spirit of the oldest apple tree in the orchard ~ we may even find his treasure! There will be mulled cider, home-made fruit pies, and children’s activities.

Our trees will be planted in memory of Joe, who started the orchard around 5 years ago when he planted apple and cherry trees on the fields, to the rear of his garden, so that people passing by could help themselves to the fruit. His neighbours and friends have continued to look after the trees on his behalf and we’ll be carrying on his legacy with the ongoing Friends of Ryebank Fields Community Orchard Project.

If you would like to donate a tree please get in touch. Donations are £20 per tree including a plaque with your name.

If you’re a baker we’re also looking for donations of home-made fruit pies. Please let us know if you can help.

Entry from either the Chorlton side M21 9WW or Firswood side M16 0HB of the fields. The event will take place on the Northern Field behind Peveril Crescent. Please bring the whole family. Dogs are welcome too.
