Environmental Defenders: At the forefront of climate justice.

“Environmental Defenders: At the forefront of climate justice” is a panel discussion organised by the Environmental Research DTP Oxford.

Climate change poses a wide range of risks, such as the rise in temperatures, changes in precipitation patterns, an increase in frequency and intensity of droughts, and sea-level rise. These are likely to increase in frequency and severity in future decades unless the current global climate change trend is reversed. Some groups will be disproportionately vulnerable to the consequences of climate change, and this as a direct consequence of inequalities originating from factors such as the level of economic development, food availability, income level and distribution, and the quality and availability of public health care. For example, those most at risk of being harmed by thermal extremes include socially isolated urban residents, the elderly, and the poor.

Environmental human rights defenders are people who strive to protect and promote human rights relating to the environment.

Their work is crucial but often underappreciated, and we are very excited to host a discussion of the role that environmental defenders are playing in encouraging action on climate change and other intersecting systemic issues. Our panel will include participants from diverse backgrounds, including representatives from local and international organisations, activists, and academics specialised in this subject.

Chair: Dr Lisa Schipper

Panellists: Tracy Kajumba, Patrick Alley, Aneesa Khan

Chair: Dr Lisa Schipper is an Environmental Social Research Fellow at the University of Oxford. She is doing research on the drivers of social vulnerability to climate change and natural hazards in developing countries, and the role that adaptation can play in reducing that vulnerability. She is currently Co-ordinating Lead Author of Chapter 18 of the Working Group 2 contribution to the Sixth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

Tracy Kajumba is part of the International Institute for Environment and Development where she works on a wide range of projects including public policy engagement, gender, and climate change, resilience programming and evaluation, and climate risk assessments.

Patrick Alley is the Director and Co-founder of the Global Witness, an NGO that focuses on corruption, conflict, resources, forests and land, and environmental defenders. Patrick focuses on the issue of conflict resources, particularly in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and in the past in Liberia and Côte d’Ivoire. Patrick also specialises in Global Witness’ work on forest and land issues, especially challenging industrial-scale logging and land grabbing in the tropics

Aneesa Khan is an environmental activist born in India and raised in Oman. After spending time organising with Earth in Brackets, Friends of the Earth International, and The Wilderness Society she is now the Executive Coordinator at SustainUS. She believes that even though climate change worsens all inequalities, its unyielding deadline is the push that brings together existing movements for environmental justice, LGBTQ and women’s rights, tribal sovereignty, racial justice, jobs, and welfare.
