Fossil fuel divestment action outside Trafford Council meeting
The Trafford Council meeting on Wednesday 9th October will debate a motion submitted by Trafford Green Party councillors calling on the Greater Manchester Pension Fund (GMPF) to divest from fossil fuels.
Last year, Trafford Council declared a climate emergency. But we need actions, not just words.
Trafford Council has assets within the GMPF valued at £732 million (at 31/3/19). The Pension Fund states that “it generally holds about 5% in traditional fossil fuel companies such as BP, Shell and Centrica”.
However, analysis by the Fossil Free Greater Manchester campaign indicates that GMPF actually has 7.5% of its funds (over £1.8 billion) invested in fossil fuels.
This would mean that Trafford Council has over £50 million invested in BP, Shell, Centrica and other fossil fuel companies!
This money should be invested in green solutions, instead of supporting these climate-wrecking industries. We want the Council to change it but we need your help.
How can you help?
Come to the Trafford Council meeting on Wednesday night. Meet at 6pm at the main entrance (opposite the Old Trafford cricket ground). Bring placards and your friends and family!
And if you live in Trafford:
Please contact your councillors asking them to support the motion. Let them know how important this issue is to you. You can find their contact details from Trafford Council website or you can pop your postcode into the ‘They Work for You’ website.
