The Meteor: Data for Journalists Workshop
A beginner’s guide to some of the data about our communities, how to access it, and how to use it to help tell stories.
There is a wealth of data that is created for and about the communities in which we live. It’s collected and used in order to focus resource, inform policy and ultimately make decisions that affect our very lives.
Although much of this data is available publicly it is often hard to locate, with the tools and understanding needed to interpret it unduly difficult.
Consisting of a mixture of presentation and practical exercises, this workshop organised by The Meteor and delivered by Open Data Manchester aims to demystify the world of data, highlight what information is and isn’t available, and give some useful tips and guidelines for interpreting and telling stories with it.
We recommend bringing an internet-enabled laptop or tablet if you have one. This workshop doesn’t use Excel, and there’s no need to download or install any software – everything we’ll be looking at is freely available on the internet.
