Travelling for pleasure: The importance of doing tourist travel sustainably (hosted by Sustainable Housing & Urban Studies Unit)

Travelling for pleasure: The importance of doing tourist travel sustainably in Greater Manchester and beyond

Tourism is a major component of local and regional travel generally. In many cases tourists use the same spaces and infrastructure as resident travellers, but with differing purposes. This has implications for sustainable travel, particularly in cities, but also in many other tourist spaces: national parks, smaller destinations and coastal destinations. This seminar will explore the relationship between tourism and transport and how improving elements of the experience for the visitor economy can also improve the travel experience for everyone.

Speakers include:

Pavol Gajdos, Manchester Bike Hire

Manchester Bike Hire was started in July 2013 with a handful of hire bikes. Founder Pavol Gajdos was joined by Richard Armitage in 2014 and together they formed Cycle Waggle Ltd. The company name is a nod to the ‘waggle dance’ of the humble but energetic bee, that well-known local symbol. Manchester Bike Hire has grown to provide traditional bike hire, retail and corporate bike repair and maintenance, and guided bike tours.

Nick Brooks-Sykes, Director of Tourism, Marketing Manchester

Marketing Manchester is the agency charged with promoting Greater Manchester on the national and international stage to visitors, investors, conference organisers and students. We are the region’s destination marketing organisation and the tourist board for Greater Manchester.
