Wellbeing and Green Festival (Commonword Cultureword)

A day to harness creativity and community to approach sustainability and the climate crisis.

2:15 PM – 3:15 PM: Creative Writing Workshop (limited spaces) – Nadia Emam

Nadia is a British-Egyptian writer, film & theatre maker from Sheffield, currently embarking on an artist residency in the North Yorkshire Moors National Park, through the Black Nature in Residence scheme. Her workshop, Naturally Poetic will nourish the inner poet in all of us, giving participants space to reconnect with their creativity & natural environment, drop into stillness and practice writing techniques to create a healthy state of flow. 2:15 PM – 3:15 PM: Zine-Making Workshop (drop in) – Heena Patel

Heena Patel is a writer and zine maker, community archivist, organiser and very occasional performer. She has been involved in diy scenes creating alternative spaces for female / LGBTQ+ / global majority communities since the early 2000s. She is one of the organisers of Over Here Zine Fest, a Manchester zine festival platforming global majority zine makers and is now running a project called Multitudes to increase zine-making participation in Greater Manchester.

3:30 PM – 4:30 PM: Somatic Movement Workshop (limited spaces) – Fae Wolfe

The workshop aims to explore the abundant resources within our own bodies using creative expressions such as free movement, connection, partner work, and reflection through writing and mark making.

3:30 PM – 4:30 PM: Zine-Making Workshop (drop-in) – Heena Patel

4:45 PM – 5:45 PM: Black in Nature Panel

Host Ella Otomewo will be joined by Nadia Eman, Fae Wolf, and Joe Ford for an open and informal chat between women of colour to speak about their work, their experience of connecting with nature, and environmental awareness.

5:45 PM – 6:30 PM: Delicious Hot Food & Green Writing Soapbox

Delicious hot food will be served alongside live entertainment in the form of a soapbox. Creative green essay writers such as Selina Nwulu will perform their newly commissioned work.

6:30 PM – 7:15 PM: ‘Your Beauty is in Your Heart’ pamphlet launch

Launch and performances from the ‘Your Beauty is in Your Heart’ short story and poetry pamphlet. A project exploring identity, displacement, and adaptation, delivered by Sheba Arts and Commonword.

7:15 PM – 8:00 PM: ‘How Green is Our City?’ digital anthology launch

Launch of Commonword’s new, digital anthology ‘How Green is Our City?’ With performances from contributors sharing writing on important green issues impacting residents of Manchester and beyond. Submissions open until 23rd February 2024
