Fracking: Government proposals to remove rights – Friends of the Earth comment

news release

Commenting on Government proposals for community payments while removing peoples’ rights to object to fracking, Friends of the Earth’s North West Campaigner Helen Rimmer said:  “This cynically-timed announcement shows that the Government will risk the environment and remove peoples’ rights in order to satisfy the demands of the fracking industry and keep us wedded to filthy fossil fuels.

“The compensation being talked about will mean little to residents near Barton Moss and elsewhere in Greater Manchester that have fracking imposed on them – and have to endure the high risks of water and air pollution, traffic and myriad of other negative impacts.

“Giving proper support to renewables and energy efficiency is the only way to ensure that the lights stay on and the UK meets its commitments to reduce pollution from fossil fuels.”
