Latest CO2 statistics for Greater Manchester

The Department of Energy & Climate Change (DECC) today released the latest statistics on carbon dioxide emissions from local authorities around the country.

The statistics, which relate to carbon dioxide emitted between 2005 and 2009, show an overall reduction of 14.2% in emissions across Greater Manchester in that period, with an 8.6% drop between 2008 and 2009.

Here in Manchester, our emissions in 2009 were 12% lower than in 2005, with the bulk of that reduction accounted for by an 11.6% drop between 2008 and 2009.

Much of these emissions reductions can probably be ascribed to the economic downturn, so the key test of whether we’re on track to meet the targets in Manchester: A Certain Future (41% by 2020) and the Greater Manchester climate change strategy (35% by 2020) will come when the economy starts growing again.
