Lords vote against decarbonisation target

news release

Commenting on the Lords vote not to include a clean power target in the Energy Bill, Friends of the Earth’s Executive Director, Andy Atkins said:
“By voting against a clean power target the Lords are saddling us with an Energy Bill that’s bad news for bill payers, the economy, and the climate – letting the Big Six energy suppliers off the hook.

“Putting off the decision on a target until at least 2016 will continue to undermine investor confidence in the UK’s energy market and risk driving much needed business and jobs abroad.

“The Liberal Democrats have played a sorry part in this decision – shamefully this is the second time they’ve blocked a clean power target, despite claiming to support it all along.”

Notes to editor

1. The House of Lords today voted on whether to include a clean power target in the Energy Bill, which would take the carbon out of our electricity supply by 2030. The vote was narrowly lost in the House of Commons earlier this year, despite a large number of MPs rebelling.

2. For the last year and a half, Friends of the Earth’s Clean British Energy campaign has been urging the Government to act now to fix our broken energy system by setting a target in the Energy Bill to clean up our electricity by 2030. Slashing energy waste and developing renewable power from our wind, sun and waves will tackle climate change, create thousands of UK jobs, and make our future fuel bills more predictable.
