Postbag: Climate Change – Time to Act

Copy of letter sent to Manchester Evening News Letters Editor: Climate change is already hitting the poorest and most vulnerable people both here in the UK, and in countries around the world where many of us have friends and families.  The impacts – heatwaves, floods, droughts – will only get worse.

Here in Greater Manchester, we have to do our bit to slash our greenhouse gas emissions and to start getting ready for this warmer and more chaotic world.  Good work is already being done around fuel poverty, “carbon literacy” and food growing.  All these activities will help create jobs, save people money and build stronger communities.

It’s also very important that our elected politicians know more about the issues. Therefore we applaud Manchester City Council for inviting climate expert Professor Kevin Anderson to address the recent full council meeting.  We hope that the other nine local authorities in Greater Manchester will speedily extend the same invitation.
