Love Your Bike, Manchester Friends of the Earth’s cycle campaign, have launched a simple online action to encourage people to show their support for the Chorlton to Manchester Cycle Way. [1]

Manchester City Council are leading a consultation on the £13.4 million proposed cycling and walking route from Chorlton to Manchester. The 5km route will run along Barlow Moor Road, through Cholrton and then Manchester Road, Upper Chorlton Road and Chorlton Road, linking with existing routes and continuing towards the Deansgate roundabout at St George’s. [2]

This is one of the first major schemes designed as part of Chris Boardman, Greater Manchester’s Cycling and Walking Commissioner’s, Made to Move programme. [3]

Graeme Sheriff , Manchester Friends of the Earth sustainable transport campaigner said: “Greater Manchester wants to become a world-class cycling city and has set a target of 10% of all journeys to be made by bicycle by 2025. To achieve this we must deliver the safe cycling routes that people need and support the Chorlton to Manchester Cycleway and invest in similar schemes across Greater Manchester.”

The Bike Life Greater Manchester report published in 2017 highlighted that 76% of people in Greater Manchester want to see more money spent on cycling and 77%of residents support building more protected roadside cycle lanes, even when this could mean less space for other road traffic. [4]

Making cycling easier and more pleasant is an ideal way to help people save on travel costs, lose weight, become healthier and more active. [5] More people cycling will also help tackle transport congestion, improve air quality and reduce C02 emissions.
