Stand against Heathrow – if you are against skyrocketing, climate-changing emissions:
Theresa May has just declared her support for a climate-trashing third runway at Heathrow Airport. Her decision is incredibly dangerous. Local Friends of the Earth groups in West London, are more determined than ever to stop the airport expanding.
Building a third runway at Heathrow would be the single biggest threat to the UK meeting its emissions-reduction targets [1]. The extra 240,000 flights that Theresa May has given the green light to would make climate-changing emissions skyrocket.
“We’ve been fighting Heathrow Airport’s third runway for 7 years. Theresa May’s decision to give it the go ahead is not going to stop us.
“A third runway will inflict more air pollution on our children and make climate change worse. Please add your name to support our campaign and stand up for the climate.”
– Nic Ferriday, West London Friends of the Earth

Notes
[1] According to the Airports Commission, when fully operational, the flights using a third runway and all additional ground operations would increase the airport’s total annual CO2 emissions to around 24 million tonnes per year; about the same as the entire annual emissions of Ghana. If aviation technology does not improve, Heathrow’s total emissions could be as high as around 28 million tonnes of CO2. Even the lower figure would make the airport the UK’s biggest single source of carbon emissions. Drax power station, the current largest single source of UK emissions, is responsible for around 20 million tonnes of CO2. See table 2.12 on page 28 of the Airports Commission’s final report on carbon emissions and Airport Watch’s briefing on CO2 emissions and new runways
