The Big Green Week: Transport

The way we get around accounts for approximately a third of our carbon emissions in the UK (excluding aviation); making thinking about the way we travel an important thing to consider.

Small changes could be walking or cycling to local shops and to visit friends where you might have driven or looking at car sharing options. If you feel you could brush up on your cycling skills or would like to learn to ride a bike; Transport for Greater Manchester offer free lessons to those who live or work in Greater Manchester.

Many workplaces across the UK have implemented cycle to work schemes in which businesses offer their employees discounted bikes and repairs in order to encourage commuters to cycle. If you would like to ‘try before you buy’, Manchester Bike Hire have a great range of cargo and e-assist bikes to check out.

If you drive a car, take a look at the AA’s tips on eco- driving – they even suggest you walk or cycle if its not far!

Going further afield -avoiding flying is one of the best things you can do to reduce your carbon footprint. See Flight-free UK’s tips on alternatives to flying and sign their pledge to reduce or not fly. Friends of the Earth have also produced a fantastic list of ideas for holidays without airports.

For this Great Big Green week Emma has decided its time to ask her employer if the Cycle to Work scheme applies to e-cargo bikes as well – and if not, to ask why.
