Waitrose throws down gauntlet by sourcing non-genetically modified soya

news release

In welcome news, Waitrose has today announced that they will source soya from Europe that is not genetically modified for their pig feed. Friends of the Earth’s senior food and farming campaigner, Clare Oxborrow, said:

“This is a big, positive step from Waitrose. Imported genetically modified soy is a disaster for communities and forests in South America, yet it’s hard to find a British banger produced without it.

“Waitrose has thrown down the gauntlet to other retailers, and they need to follow suit. What is also needed are concerted efforts across the industry to phase out the use of imported soy in any animal feed, and use European-grown plant proteins instead.

“Ultimately, we all need to eat less meat so that what is produced is better for us, and the planet.”
