Youth Strike 4 Climate Manchester news release: The Ecological Crisis is Imminent; Youth are Leading the Fight.

news release

On Friday the 20th of September, people of all ages from all over Greater Manchester will be joining the global #ClimateStrike, happening in St Peter’s Square, to demand the government take urgent action towards this ecological crisis.

For the past few months youth strikers, unions and organisations have dedicated their time and effort towards this international strike. The Youth Strike Manchester team have been managing the upcoming strike and encourage everyone to attend. It’s time we take action.

“I strike because I don’t want to study and stay silent while our world is burning away”  MAX CZEKALSKI

The strike will last from 10am to 4pm on Friday the 20th of September. It will take place at St Peter’s Square, M2 5PD, Manchester.

During this time expect an array of speeches, activities and even a march.

10 am – 12 pmThe strike will commence with inspiring speeches, accompanied by some chanting and music. There will be a combination of students and politicians speaking, as well as an opportunity for members of the public to come forward and voice their opinions .

12 pm – 1 pm
We recommend families come along around this time as it is welcoming for all ages. Expect arts and crafts with an activist theme in addition to a few fun activities with XR families.

1 pm – 2pm
When the clock strikes one those who have an alarm clock, whether it be a physically brought digital clock or on their phone, will let them ring. This will represent national unity as people will partake all over the country.

The alarm will indicate the initiation of the march around Manchester. The message we intend to send is that time is up and the Government have to take action. With regard to the march, for those who are participating, we ask that you be considerate towards the public and avoid tram lines for this is a peaceful event. We can assure that there will be stewards guiding and assisting the march 2 pm – 4 pm

From 2 pm onwards we will have an open mic where people can share their thoughts, poems and more. Also, you can look forward to our music playlists with environmentally themed songs!
“Our world and our future is at stake, we need everyone to unite and demand change” AOIFE M. RODRIGUEZ URUCHURTU

Our Demands: As part of the UKSCN (UK Student Climate Network), Youth Strike MCR has the same demands which are:

1.Save The Future: The Government declare a climate emergency and implement a Green New Deal to achieve Climate Justice. [1]

2.Teach The Future: The national curriculum is reformed to address the ecological crisis as an educational priority.

3.Tell The Future: The Government communicate the severity of the ecological crisis and the necessity to act now to the general public.

4.Empower The Future: The Government recognise that young people have the biggest stake in our future, by incorporating youth views into policy making and bringing the voting age down to 16.

Notes for editors

1) Green New Deal
What is the GND?
The Green New Deal is a set of five principles to guide a policy plan that will
fundamentally restructure our economy to deliver good jobs and a habitable future.

The principles are:
1. Totally decarbonise the economy of the United Kingdom through a governmentled, ten year mobilisation for a just and prosperous transition including the infrastructure needed to benefit all communities and workers.

2. Create millions of new, well-paid and secure jobs ensuring sustainable and meaningful livelihoods for all workers, including those in today’s high emissions sectors.

3. Massively reduce social and economic inequalities with investment targeted in communities where it is most needed in the UK as a result of historic and current oppression, and the green economy that emerges will operate equitably and work in the interest of these communities.

4. Protect and restore vital threatened habitats and carbon sinks, and ensure the provision of clean water, clean air and green spaces, securing a safe and healthy environment for all.

5. Build a resilient society prepared for the impacts of climate change that are now unavoidable, readying ourselves in unity to meet these challenges in ways that protect the most vulnerable, including: de-industrialised communities, the global south, deprived rural communities, communities of colour, migrant communities, low-income workers, women, the elderly, the homeless, people with disabilities and young people.
